Philip J. Malinowski Lifelong resident of Fishtown, beloved brother, cousin, uncle and great uncle passed away peacefully, March 20, 2024, surrounded by family and friends.
Philip was born on May 1, 1951 to Stephen William Malinowski and Mary “Dolly” Maio. Growing up, he assisted in the family-owned bakery, usually making boxes after school. He attended St. Michael’s elementary and then went to North Catholic High School for boys. Upon graduation, Philip received an associates degree in electrical engineering from the Philadelphia Community College. In May 1977, he became a firefighter for the City of Philadelphia, he also became a certified EMT. Philip received many letters of commendation over his 34-year career and worked his way up to becoming a Lieutenant in the fire department. He spent most of his time at Engine 41 Ladder 24 and retired in 2011.
Phil was a lifelong learner. He enjoyed taking classes, being on his computer, reading and watching educational videos on various subjects. He spent a lot of time hanging out at the Lutheran Settlement House, as a youth and a senior. He was an avid dog lover, musician, antique collector and outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending his time at the mountains, camping, fishing and hunting and vacationing with family and friends in Atlantic City and Wildwood. He had fond memories of growing up closely with his grandparents Wasyl and Klaudia Malinowski, his Uncle John Malinowski (Jennie) and cousins (Anna, John, William and Harry). He told the best jokes, was a great conversationalist and enjoyed performing magic tricks for his nieces and nephews.
Philip will be greatly missed by his older brother, Stephen Malinowski (Catherine) and younger sister, Barbara Bruce. His cousins, Harry Malinowski (Nancy) and Anna Kruse and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 beginning at 8:45 AM followed by his Funeral Service at 10 AM, in the Ukranian Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 830 N. Franklin Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.
